Today, I finally got to take home my Opae`ula habitat! They are a little shook up by the trip home. But at least they are visible and not under the rock. I am going to update this site every month for 2 years.
Today I am talking about how to take care of my Opae`ula. First of all, they can only take a toothpick tip of spirulina. you can feed it daily, or 2 times a week. Keep it in the refrigerator or it will spoil faster. Keep moisture away from the spirulina or it also will spoil. If there is a dead shrimp get it out immediately. when breaks down, the toxic in it will kill the other shrimp. use a Mcdonalds straw to get it out. And that's the most important way to save your shrimp!
Today, I finally made the cover for the Opae`ula habitat! Since you cant really put in a real plant, you have to drill in a hole. Then once you have done that, wrap two pieces of memory on each other. Make sure they`re not jagged or its gonna be crooked. Then, add in your Opae`ula in, put the cover on top and voila! You made your Opae`ula habitats! I am really excited to bring my Opae`ula habitat home!
Today, I put an artificial plant in my habitat. First, we took out our rock. Next, since hot glue is not supposed to be in water, we dried the top of the rock and the bottom wet. After the top has dried, we picked a fake plant and glued it on. Then, we put the rock with plant back in the tank and finished!
Today, we prepared the brackish water for the Opae`ula habitat. Brackish water is a mixture of salt and fresh water. first, we put in a tiny teaspoon of decomposers in the habitat and mix. Then we got to choose a rock for the habitat! then put one-in-a half vases of water. then put the salt in. Next, mix well or until the salt dissolves in the water. Then, use the hydrometer to see the gravity of the water which is supposed to be 1.006. Once it is correct, yo can pour brackish water up til its half way. and its done!
Today, we prepared the gravel. We put in I think, half an inch of gravel in the glass jar. Then we pour out the gravel in a bucket. then we put in a 1/5 of water to wash the gravel. Once the waters cloudy, you pour the water out but not the gravel. Then do the same thing until it is not cloudy. then you pour the water back into the vase. and that`s how you prepare the gravel for an opae`ula habitat.
These shrimp are opae`ula. The green powder is what they eat in this home. we can take home at most, 15 shrimp with opae`ula dollars. Did you know that opae means shrimp and ula means red so, opae`ula means red shrimp. we have some big shrimp which are fast and hard to catch. every month, we will add to the blog section. But the shrimp will not be red while getting used to their new habitat.
