Anchialine Ponds of Hawaii

Anchialine ponds (the turquoise dots) are found around the world. In Hawai'i they are found on Maui, Molokai, Oahu, Hawai’i, and Kaho’olawe. They are found in the lava fields, by the coastline. The water they live in is a mixture of salt water and fresh water, called brackish water. Salt water from the ocean comes in from the bottom of the Anchialine pools through the lava rock and lava tubes. Fresh water comes from ground water and rainfall. Water in the ponds become saltier when the ocean tide rises and as water evaporates. The water can also become less salty by more rainfall and as more ground water flows into it the ponds.
