One day my uncle spilled my Opae`ula tank and 1 died :(. Ten he got me 5 more and that is how I got 14 Opae`ula. Some of them are pure white :0! Some of them are actually pure red! Also I do not see any pregnant yet. Well maybe because I don't know what they look like when they are pregnant.
My habitat is doing great :). All my shrimp are still alive and they ate all of the food I gave them. Well 2 of them are loosing their color. I don't see any breeding or pregnant either. Most of them are moving constantly and some are just sitting there.
To take of your Opae`ula you will need food to feed the Opae`ula's. You have to feed your Opae`ula everyday or twice a week. Twice week is the least. Another thing to take care of your Opae`ula;s you have to not let the water evaporate to half way. You also have to avoid putting the habitat directly in the sun. You can't even put it in the sun for a short time because
Today we finished our habitat. :0. I just really can't believe myself. So first we waited for instructions. Then we got called up to get our shrimp in our habitat. Then when we were done cutting 2 strips we then go out side so Ms. On can help us do the cover. That is all we did today. :).
Today we put Accessories in our habitat so our Opae`ula's can have more places to rest. First, we let our rocks out to dry only on the top because we don't want the decompers to dry out. Next, we glue gunned our rock to put artificial seaweed in. Then we made a video on how to make a Opae`ula habitat. Well that is it for today. :)
Today my group prepared the gravel for our habitat.First, we wrote our names on the tape and put the on the glass vase We washed the gravel 3 times and poured out the water 3 times. The water was cold but it was worth it for our Opae`ula. When were done we got to scoop the gravel into the glass vase which was going to be the habitat. We had to use spoons to scoop up the gravel 5 times. We had to work really fast because we were the last group. Well that is it. Today we are going to prepare the water for our Opae`ula habitat. First, we put in infected gravel for the bacteria. Then we got to pick a rock. The rock we picked have algae, bacteria, producers, and Decomposers. We also used a Hydrometer to measure the water and how much salt Mr. David put. The water we are making is going to be a specific gravity of 1.006 to 1.008. The Opae`ula came in the water with a specific gravity of 1.004. Sea water has a specific gravity of 1.024 and the fresh water has a specific gravity of 1.000.
Their are about 1,000 Opae`ula's in the tank. These Opae`ula's came from the Island of Hawaii. They sent us 4 bigger shrimps that have claws and swim faster than the Opae`ula's. Some of them in the tank fight a lot. They eat a kind of algae that is called Spirulina. When they are stressed they lose color and turn white. When you bend down they look like seahorses because of their tale.
