Now I have 17 shrimp because they mated which is 4 more than when I started. One of my shrimp died. Some of my shrimp just eat the algae of the rocks.
This is a video that we made using iMovie. It shows the steps we took in making the Opaeula habitat.
Today I took my Opaeula home. I am starting with 13 and hoping to get more! When I got home, I put it on a table by my other fish. I also fed it with the toothpick and they started eating.
We learned a lot about taking care of our shrimp. First, we leaned about taking care of the water. Since there is a hole in the cap, it lets there be oxygen so we cant fill up the water or else no air will come in. Also, the hole evaporates the fresh water so we have to fill it with room temperature water. Then, we have to feed it. We feed with something small like a toothpick, and dip it in our Spirulina that we use for fish food. Then we take off the cap and tap the toothpick on the glass and the food sprinkles off. If there is some left on the toothpick, then wipe it off or use a new toothpick because if it stays on, the moisture from the air will make it moldy and if the shrimp eat moldy food, they will die. You should also keep the Spirulina in the refrigerator it will last long. Just don't get it wet or it will mold. Lastly, the shrimp mold so you should use a straw to get it out. It is best to use a McDonalds straw because it is thick. Today we started to put our shrimp in. First before we put our shrimp in, we made the cover. We cut out 2 strips of sticky foam so the cover could fit. We had a drilled hole in the top for the shrimp the breath. Algae was on the rock to produce oxygen, but it will eventually run out. Then, we put our shrimp in. We then put the cover on it so it wouldn't splash out.
Today, we decorated our habitats. We chose either a short artificial plant, or a tall one or a short one. Before we did choose one, we let our rock dry out it the sun.We got it glue gunned to our rock and let it dry for a little while. Then, we put it in our glasses and arranged it.
Today, we put in some bacteria, added a rock, and put in the salt water. First, we put in some bacteria for the shrimp. We used gravel in brackish water. After that, we chose a rock that had a little algae on it. We needed algae on it so the shrimp can eat it. Lastly, we added salt water. We made the salt water with salt and we made sure it was not to much water or to much salt so we used a hydrometer. We made sure that it was at 0.06. Finally, we poured the water filling half of our glass. We let it out in the sun after that.
Today we started preparing the gravel for the Opae`ula habitat. We washed the gravel to get all the dust off of it. First, we measured how much to put in our cups. Then, we put the gravel from our cups into a bucket to wash it. After we washed it, we poured the water out and put the gravel back in our cups. That was how we prepared the gravel!
This is my Opae`ula blog. These are the Opae`ula in this tank. These were mailed from the island of Hawaii from a pond. There are 1000 shrimp in the tank. Right now, they are eating Spirulina fish food. Some are eating algae of the rocks. How much food do they eat? Sense there is 1000 shrimp, They might get a lot of food but sense they are small, maybe they don't get a lot. Right now these Opae`ula are not babies, but they are not adults. That is all about our Opae`ula!
